Vikki Yeates I would describe my work as ‘Gothic Art’, dark, atmospheric images with a lyrical quality, inspired by sinister tales and macabre stories. This type of subject matter is well suited to my style of drawing, which has been influenced by German Expressionism, particularly the wood-block prints of ‘Die Brücke’. More recently I have been interested in experimenting with the written word in my paintings, taking the basic idea of illustration one step further, to create works of art which can stand alone. Scratching words into the paint seems to imbue the picture with power, and the words also become imagery.
