Dorothy Lamb
I just love making things – be they glass, mosaic, calligraphy or textiles – and seldom, read also never, have a time when I don’t have a number of projects on the go.
As a young child I was inspired to knit by my Nan and made my first creation, a buttercup yellow dress with belt holes, for my panda, Soo Corbett (Sooty’s girlfriend) at the tender age of 7. Knitting has remained a pleasure throughout my adult life, culminating in the latest addition to my repertoire, cosy cuffs.
I have always been interested in letterforms and it was a natural evolution that calligraphy should be my first evening class. My current collection reflects my love of Art Nouveau, which is on a par with my appreciation of the Arts & Crafts movement.
Tesserae have a crisp, colourful practical appeal for me, yet have the versatility to be created into something a little quirkier, like the turtle and elephant tables.
A craft which I have loved and wanted to try for many years but never quite got round to was stained glass and, now that I have got round to it, I am obsessed! I love the solidity of leaded glass and the vibrancy of colour and the effects of the texture of the glass and, unlike knitting and felt making which are very clean occupations, stained glass gives me the chance to use many practical skills – pattern drawing, leading, soldering and cementing – to really feel that I am making something hands on.
