She spent four years at Tokyo’s prestigious Tama Art University where she studied textile and graphic design, and specialised at printed fabrics and natural dyeing. Here Akiko learnt many traditional Japanese techniques for producing authentic designs. In 1998 she came to London to develop her skills, enrolling at Chelsea College of Art and Design to specialise in knitwear. She graduated in 2001 with a first-Class BA and was awarded a Texprint price for work. After graduation, Akiko has been working as a freelance designer; include work at Missoni’s headquarters near Milan, producing design for the men’s collection and colour combinations for ‘Missoni Sports’ range. Akiko set up her own business in 2002 to produce knitted accessories. She is based at the new Cockpit Arts Studios in Deptford. The Crafts Council has recently awarded her prestigious Development Award to help her launch her own collection of knitted accessories. Akiko Kingsbury’s knitted accessories such as scarves, shawls, cushions and throws are characterised from wide range of colours, style and techniques. A pattern embracing Japanese and Asian hues is fundamental to her work, creating vibrancy. Akiko’s design also display a blend of techniques. Blended with stripes, diamond patterns, knitted pleats, racking technique and chevrons give striking design and texture to her accessories. Main materials are Viscose, Silk, Linen, Cotton and Pure Wool. They are unique and hand-made accessories that add a dash of luxury to everyday life.
