| Craig Shuttlewood is an Artist and Illustrator based in Brighton, UK. His work has been exhibited in many galleries from London to New York and purchased by private collectors. Using photographs and sketches his work recaptures elements of decay, deterioration, time and change within a structural environment. The key is to represent a neglected wall, rusted metal surface or the marks discovered behind wallpaper hung years previously. This series is constructed by building up the surface in layers, then sanding and scraping to expose colour and marks previously made. Earlier work has a different approach expressing quirky illustrative elements and words based around the idea of a personal diary. By recording the spontaneous beauty of everyday observations, elements are selected which formed both conceptual and wall hung artwork. More recently the artist has naturally focused on both ideas. "By placing snippets of the things that surround me within abstract stages the work forms a narrative". As well as paintings on panels or stretched canvases, Craig is interested in creating more tactile pieces such as books. "A 'sketchbook' might start out as a large canvas but later be cut into pieces, roughly bound and worked into further. I am fascinated by this process of breaking down and creating something completely different that becomes interactive". Next Exhibition: 'PRAWN TOAST' 2nd May - 30th June. Venue: Red Roaster, 1 St James's Street, Brighton. Part of the Fringe Festival. www.shuttlewood.me |
